Updating your toolset
TusParkThe 7th of January is the first Frontend NE of the new year. And 2016 is shaping up to be quite an exciting year for all you Frontend-NE-ers!
We’re kicking the new year off in style with Kerry Gallagher and Richard Powell, who’ll be sharing how using new tooling and frameworks has allowed them and their team to level up as developers.
Kerry will be taking us through how she converted her team’s build system and test suite from Require.js/Grunt to Webpack. She’ll be outlining the sizeable benefits as well as the struggles encountered along the way.
Richard will share how migrating a large codebase from Backbone to React has made his team very happy. He’ll be using real-world examples to examine 3 concepts:
- Code simplicity
- Code predictability
- The importance of state
This talk is not an introduction to React, or an explanation of Backbone. Instead it’s an exposé of the “aha” moments that using React has led to, that are the difference between good code and great code, whether you use React or not.

Thanks again to Luke Jackson who took us through Flexbox last week. Check out his slides on Speaker Deck and have a play with Flexbox Froggy for a fun way to get hands on with the syntax.
